LLPH-CR today endorsed Calandra Vargas in the primary for Colorado's 5th Congressional District. Calandra Vargas is challenging Rep. Doug Lamborn who is running for re-election.
LLPH-CR stated the following in endorsing Calandra Vargas,
"Calandra Vargas is a fresh, young (age 32) conservative who will bring a new perspective focused on liberty to Washington D.C. After winning 58% of the convention vote in Colorado's 5th Congressional District and coming close to defeating Rep. Lamborn, Vargas is still an underdog, but she has a very good chance to win if conservatives turn out for her.
Josh Dunn, a political scientist professor at UCCS stated, "Dunn said he has his eye on the U.S. House race where incumbent Doug Lamborn is taking on Calandra Vargas. He said Lamborn has been in tough primaries every election year, and this could be it." (KOAA.com).
One of the goals of LLPH-CR is to find new leaders who can champion our message of liberty and freedom while bringing new people to conservatism.
Vargas fits this mold perfectly stating, "I've been told I'm a strange political animal by all my friends. So I'm this hardcore, liberty-minded conservative, but I have some of these liberal elements. My dad's a Democrat, he's Bernie Sanders-supporting. I grew up very hippie ... it wasn't until high school that I began really challenging my world view. So at 17 years old when 9/11 happened, I decided to do a program overseas called Youth With a Mission. It's a Christian missionary organization, but they're really phenomenal ... really out-of-the-box."
She has gone on to state, "Majorities matter! How can we secure our policy priorities if we do not have a team of conservatives in DC and how can we build a team if the public does not vote for us? I am a team player and a bridge-builder. Vote for me so I can be a leader in the Republican Party. I’m ready to represent the wonderful people of CD 5 and bring the best of Colorado to Washington.”
Rep. Doug Lamborn has been in D.C. for several years now. His ranking with LLPH-CR is not bad (he's ranked as a conservative reform ally), but he is representing an R+13 district and has done very little besides being a backbencher conservative Republican since 2007. We have continued to hope that Lamborn would learn and start working for conservative wins whether it be by proposing conservative reform amendments or truly fighting big government liberals on both sides of the aisle through extremely tough votes. He has done neither, and it is therefore time to bring him back to Colorado.
It is time to send a new voice to Washington D.C.! We are proud to endorse Calandra Vargas for the June 28th primary TOMORROW to represent Colorado's 5th Congressional District."
